Statement of Significance

The gabled portion of the Intellectually Disabled School building at 7-13 Skene Street, Stawell, makes a significant architectural and visual contribution to the predominantly late 19th and early 20th century residential area. It is significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level, being associated with residential developments in Stawell in the early 20th century and it demonstrates some important design qualities of an interwar Californian Bungalow style. These qualities include the gable roof forms clad in galvanised corrugated steel, brick wall construction, paired square timber verandah columns above brick piers, solid brick verandah balustrade, timber framed double hung windows arranged singularly or as banks of three, wide eaves with exposed timber rafters, elongated brick chimneys, single storey height, and the timber shingling in the projecting gable end. The mature palm tree adjacent the building on the site also contributes to the aesthetic amenity of the place.
