Text from the 2004 heritage study:

The house at 27 Scallan Street, Stawell, makes a significant contribution to the architectural and historical amenity of the local area. Constructed in the mid-late 19th century with later rear additions, this building has been St. Leonard's Private Hospital and a private home (at different times) prior to it being acquired by the Lutheran Church as a Sunday School in 1957.
The house at 27 Scallan Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the gable roof form that traverses the site, together with rear hipped and gabled roof forms that project at the side. Other intact qualities include the horizontal weatherboard wall construction, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, rendered brick chimneys with projecting cornices, narrow eaves with timber brackets, timber framed double hung windows and timber framed door, projecting bay window at the rear, and the return concave verandah.
The house at 27 Scallan Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the second half of the 19th century. In addition, the property has associations with Nurse Margaret Booth who established "St. Leonard's" private hospital there in the early 20th century. Sister Anderson continued this hospital from 1922, before the property reverted to a private house. The property has further associations with St. Peter's Lutheran Church who purchased the building in 1961 for use as a Sunday School.
Overall, the house at 27 Scallan Street is of LOCAL significance.
