Statement of Significance

The house at 52-54 Napier Street, Stawell, has significance as a moderately intact example of the Late Victorian style, and for its garden setting. Possibly built in the late 19th or very early 20th century, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.

The house at 52-54 Napier Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is possibly associated with residential developments in Stawell in the late 19th or very early 20th century, and although partially altered, it demonstrates original design qualities of a Late Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form that traverses the site, together with the hipped roof and skillion verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, rendered brick chimneys, narrow eaves with timber brackets, panelled timber front door with sidelights and highlights and the timber framed double hung windows. The garden setting and flat timber picket fence also contribute to the significance of the place.
