Why is it significant?
The former Butcher's shop at 129 Main Street, Stawell, makes a significant contribution to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape. The form and rear sections of the building and other outbuilding also contribute to the architectural amenity of the area. Built between 1872-73 as a butcher's shop, the building appears to be in good condition.
The former Butcher's shop at 129 Main Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although altered, it still demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the elaborate parapet having incised rectangular panelling and a raised central feature with bull's mask, decorative scrollwork flanking the central parapet feature, and the squat parapet piers at the building corners below which are stylised consoles with small decorative banding. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the heavily moulded stringcourse, large rectangular title panel, pilaster remnants at the sides, small stringcourse, parapeted gable roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron, and the rear face brick wall construction. The Victorian Picturesque styled outbuilding also contributes to the significance of the place, including its steeply pitched gable roof forms clad in galvanised corrugated iron, face brick wall construction, decorative timber bargeboards on the gable end, and face brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops. Another intact feature is the south brick boundary wall spanning from the former Butcher's shop to the gabled outbuilding.
The former Butcher's shop at 129 Main Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commercial developments in Stawell in the second half of the 19th century and with the 19th century Melbourne and Stawell architect, George Inskip. In particular, this building was constructed in 1876 as a butcher's shop.
Overall, the former Butcher's shop at 129 Main Street is of LOCAL significance.
