Why is it significant?
Text from the 2004 heritage study (NB: the building discussed below has been demolished):

The building at 124 Main Street, Stawell, contributes to the architectural and visual amenity of the predominantly 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape. Built in 1876 as part of a three shop complex for T. Brown and Company, the building was later occupied by W. Whiteside and Co., Tailors and Gentlemen's General Outfitters by 1888. Although substantially altered, the parapet detailing and rear forms and construction is original or early and the building appears to be in fair condition when viewed from the street.
The building at 124 Main Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although altered, it still demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the remnant parapet base, side pier and projecting rectangular motifs supported by paired consoles, projecting moulded and dentillated stringcourse and the wide title panel. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the rear hipped roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron, together with the rear and parapeted side face brick walls, and the large face brick chimney. The architectural significance of this building also relies on the retention of the adjoining shops at 120 and 122 Gold Reef Mall which formed part of the original building complex.
The building at 124 Main Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with commercial developments in Stawell in the second half of the 19th century. In particular, this building and the neighbouring shops at 120 and 122 Gold Reef Mall (forming a three shop complex) have associations with Thomas Brown of T. Brown and Company, original owner who instigated construction in 1876. The building also has associations with W. Whiteside and Co., Tailors and Gentlemen's General Outfitters and occupiers by 1888.
Overall, the building at 124 Main Street is of LOCAL significance.
