Shop (former 'Foster's Mensland'), 111 Main Street, STAWELL

The building at 111 Main Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. Although the shopfront has been greatly altered or reconstructed in the inter war years, the scale of the building, the general form of the parapet, and the pressed metal lined cantilever verandah linking with the adjacent parapet are those particular elements that contribute to the historical and architectural amenity of the area. This building was associated with the operation of Williams the Shoemen's shop in Main Street from 1874 until 1995.

The building was renovated for Williams the Shoeman. The architect for the firm in the 1930s to 1950s was Rhys Evan Hopkins. In the obituary written by Neil Clerehan he was described thus: "He was an early convert to Modernism. In those years, the most advances local design was on a par with what was appearing in Europe."
