Statement of Significance
What is significant?
How is it significant?
Why is it significant?
The building at 81-83 Main Street, Stawell, is historically and architecturally significant at a CONTRIBUTORY level. Although the shopfront has been altered, there are some intact elements of the early main facade as well as intact building fabric at the rear. Those intact qualities at the front include the rectangular parapet with a crowning title panel and flanking scrollwork, incised title panel within the parapet, flanking projecting pilasters with incised panels and the elaborate urn that adorns one pilaster. The rear double gable roof form clad in galvanised corrugated iron, parapeted face brick wall construction to the rear gable end, side brick wall construction, face brick chimney and the oculus gable ventilator are those particular elements at the rear that contribute to the historical and architectural amenity of the area. The heritage value of the front and rear form and construction of this building is reliant on the retention of the rear form and construction of the neighbouring building at 79 Main Street, given that both shopfronts form part of one original building complex.
