Statement of Significance

The One Tree Hill Cemetery Memorial and headstone of David John James at the north-west corner of Griffiths and Leslie Streets, Stawell West, are historically and socially significant at a LOCAL level. As markers of the area of the first burial site at Pleasant Creek from 1854 until 1858 and the headstone of David John James who died at Pleasant Creek in 1858, the memorial and headstone have associations with some of the early pioneers of Stawell during the initial years of the goldrush. These monuments are recognised and valued by the Stawell community for cultural, historical and commemorative reasons.
