Statement of Significance

The house at 27 Childe Street, Stawell, has significance as a predominantly intact example of a Victorian style. Although no historical details have been ascertained, the Victorian design suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th or very early 20th century. The house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.

The house at 27 Childe Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Stawell in the late 19th and very early 20th centuries. It also demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form, together with the hipped convex verandah that projects towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the symmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, painted brick chimney with a corbelled top, narrow eaves with paired timber brackets, symmetrical arrangement of the central four panelled timber door (with sidelights and highlights) and flanking timber framed double hung windows, and the stop chamfered verandah columns (with projecting moulded capitals) and the cast iron valances and brackets.

Overall, the house at 27 Childe Street is of LOCAL significance.
