Statement of Significance

The house at 29 Silvermines Road, St. Arnaud makes a significant contribution to the predominantly single storey, Victorian styled residential streetscape of Silvermines Road. The Victorian style of the house suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th century.

Although partially altered (due to the introduced verandah columns, concrete verandah floor and side carport), the house at 29 Silvermines Road is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in St. Arnaud in the late 19th century and it demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the symmetrical composition, single storey height, simple dominant hipped roof form and return hipped verandah. Other intact qualities include the galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, tuckpointed brick walls, brick chimneys with corbelled tops, eaves with paired timber brackets, centrally located front door with side and toplights, flanking timber framed, double hung windows and decorative cast iron verandah detailing (posts valances and brackets). The tall hedge on the front boundary contributes to the significance of the place.

Overall, the house at 29 Silvermines Road is of LOCAL significance.
