Although the cantilever verandah and metal framed shopfronts have been introduced, the two-storey building, 70-72 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, makes a significant architectural and visual contribution to the predominantly Victorian and Federation streetscape. This building was originally constructed in 1864, with later additions in 1901 and substantial alterations in the 20th century. The two-storey building, 70-72 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although altered with the introduced cantilever verandah and metal framed shopfronts, the building still demonstrates original design qualities of a rudimentary Victorian commercial style. These qualities include the hipped roof form clad in lapped galvanised corrugated iron (painted dark red) and five timber framed double hung first floor windows with masonry sills and shallow segmentally arched heads above which are brick voussoirs. Other intact qualities include the brick wall construction (excluding the overpainting), symmetrical composition, two storey height and narrow eaves. The two-storey building, 70-72 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with Alfred Giles who operated a hardware store on the site for the latter part of the nineteenth century and until the late 1920s. Overall, the two-storey building, 70-72 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, is of LOCAL significance.
