Statement of Significance

The Memorial, 40 Napier Street, St. Arnaud, consists of a concrete foundation, with a brick base that displays an early 375 pound battery drive clutch gear from the former Lord Nelson Mining Company (1883-1915). The Memorial was presented to the community in 1993, on behalf of the St. Arnaud Rotary Club. It commemorates the major economic contribution made by the Lord Nelson Mine to the town of St. Arnaud in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Memorial to the Lord Nelson Mining Company is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of the Lord Nelson Mining Company which operated mining activities between 1883/84 and 1915, and contributed substantially to the economic development of the town. The clutch gear which is part of the memorial, operated the drive shaft that originally worked the 100 stampers at the mine. The Memorial is also associated with Tom Esmore who restored and presented the clutch gear to the St. Arnaud community, which was placed on public exhibition by the St. Arnaud Rotary Club on 13 March 1993.

The Memorial to the Lord Nelson Mining Company is scientifically significant at a LOCAL level. The clutch gear demonstrates a form of mining technology and process used in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries.
