Statement of Significance
The house, 8878 Wimmera Highway, St. Arnaud, has significance as a predominantly intact example of a Victorian style. Probably built during the second half of the 19th century, the house is associated with rural residential developments in the St. Arnaud area during that period. The house appears to be in fair-good condition. The house, 8878 Wimmera Highway, St. Arnaud, is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in the rural outskirts of St. Arnaud during the second half of the 19th century. The house also demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form at the front that traverses the site, together with the double hipped (M) roof forms at the rear. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the predominantly symmetrical composition, single storey height, face brick wall construction, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, two face brick chimneys with multi-corbelled tops, modest eaves with decorative timber brackets, projecting flat-roofed faceted window bays at the front crowned with dentillated cornices, central front timber framed doorway with sidelights and highlights, shallow-arched timber framed double hung windows, cream brick quoining about the building corners and main doorway, and the return verandah with gable portico at the front, and cast iron columns bracket and valances. Overall, the house, 8878 Wimmera Highway, St. Arnaud, is of LOCAL significance.
