The cottage in Burnside Road, represents an early and predominantly intact example of Victorian vernacular styled domestic design in St. Arnaud. It may have been constructed as early as the c.1860s, although the bullnosed shape of the verandah suggests a date after c.1890. The cottage in Burnside Road is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in St. Arnaud in the 19th century, and with the Carlyon family, long time owners and local woodcutters. The cottage also demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian vernacular style. These qualities include the gable roof forms and the hipped bullnosed verandah that projects towards the street frontage. Other intact qualities include the galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, horizontal weatherboard wall construction, and the symmetrically arranged central timber panelled door and flanking timber framed double hung 12 paned windows. The substantial palm tree also contributes to the significance of the place. Overall, the cottage in Burnside Road is of LOCAL significance.
