The house at 44 Alma Street makes a significant contribution to the predominantly single storey, Victorian styled residential streetscapes of Alma Street between Canterbury and McMahon Streets and of the intersecting Queens Avenue. The transitional Late Victorian and Edwardian style of the house suggests that it was constructed in the early 20th century (c.1900-1910). The house at 44 Alma Street is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level It is associated with residential developments in St. Arnaud in the early 20th century, and it demonstrates original design qualities of a transitional Late Victorian and Edwardian style. These qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height and main hipped roof form as well as the secondary hipped roof and bullnosed verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the dark red corrugated Colorbond roof cladding, horizontal weatherboard wall cladding, two brick chimneys with corbelled tops, narrow eaves with decorative panelling, paterae and timber brackets, timber framed double hung windows arranged in pairs, four panelled timber door with sidelights, bracketed timber window hood mould, window hood, cast iron verandah decoration (valances and brackets), and the turned timber verandah columns. The recent front timber picket fence also contributes to the significance of the place. Overall, the house at 44 Alma Street is of LOCAL significance.
