Statement of Significance

This site dates from the turn of the century and includes substantial brick machinery foundations (winder bed) of an unusual design, plus a 50 m wide treated tailings dump of low significance. Though of relatively poor integrity, the machinery foundations have scientific significance.

Brownings Luck Company Mine Site is historically and scientifically important at a LOCAL level as a substantially intact example of an important gold mining technique. Gold mining sites are of crucial importance for the pivotal role they have played since 1851 in the development of Victoria.

Overall Brownings Luck Company Mine Site is of LOCAL significance.

RECOMMENDED LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE: LOCAL

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Site 77.1 has poor integrity and little historical importance and hence low cultural significance.
Site 77.0 has:
. Scientific Significance, due to the survival of some well preserved brick machinery
foundations. These foundations are of an unusual design.
