Statement of Significance

In 1894 Charles Kingston and his son William sank a shaft and struck a reef at nine feet that yielded 4 dwt of gold to the dish. A five-ton load they carted to the Oriental mine's crusher at Stawell yielded 18 oz. The Kingstons took out a claim in February 1895 and formed the Kingston Gold Mining Company in 1900. The mine paid sufficient over the next six years for two more companies to work the reef: the Kingston No. 1 North Mining Company in 1901, with seven Stawell shareholders, and the Kingston North Gold Mining Company in 1902. The mines' income barely covered costs, however, and they evidently had ceased production by December 1903. This place retains attributes of a characteristic gold mining area. Further historical research and detailed site inspection may indicate that the place be considered for upgrading to local significance. Support for retention of the place should be given where possible.
