This Greek Orthodox church is of particular cultural significance as the only Greek Cypriot church in Australia for many years. West Sunshine attracted many Greek and Greek Cypriot settlers in the late 1950s and 1960s especially, the period of Greek migration following World War Two and the war in Cyprus. Its unique character is especially evident at the annual celebration of the feast of St. Andrew, when thousands attend St. Andrew's was amongst the earliest Greek Orthodox churches to be built in suburban Melbourne. As part of the broader Greek Orthodox community, it plays an important role in the life of the Greek community in Melbourne, said to be one of the largest Greek cities in the world (in terms of population).
