The St. John's Anglican Church, 43 Grampians Road, Halls Gap, has significance as a moderately intact example of a Late Victorian Carpenter Gothic styled church building. Built in 1889 at Sheep Hills as St. John's Anglican Church, the building was designed by the Ballarat architects, Tappin, Gilbert and Dennehy. After serving the Sheep Hills community for several years, the church building was relocated to the former pound site at Halls Gap in 1970. The Church appears to be in good condition when viewed from the road. The St. John's Anglican Church is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Late Victorian Carpenter Gothic style. These qualities include the steeply pitched gable roof form, together with the lower steeply pitched roof form and traversing gable forming the chancel and rear porch respectively, and the side porch gable at the front. Other intact qualities include the single storey height, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, gabled ventilation dormers, timber framed point arched windows, decorative stained glass and the pointed arched timber door openings and timber doors. The St. John's Anglican Church is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of the Anglican Church at Halls Gap from 1970. Furthermore, the building has associations with the development of the Anglican Church at Sheep Hills between 1889 and 1970. This building was constructed in 1889 to a design by the Ballarat architects, Tappin, Gilbert and Dennehy, which provide other important associations. The St. John's Anglican Church is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is valued and recognised by sections of the Halls Gap community for religious reasons. Overall, the St. John's Anglican Church is of LOCAL significance.
