Statement of Significance

The Police Camp at the Deep Lead diggings was established late in 1857 or early 1858. Sixteen post holes remain clearly visible in the ground which may have been the site of the police stables at this camp. The post holes are about 8 feet apart and there are 8 each side. They may have been for the horse stalls. The Police Camp is marked on an early map in the area known as Broadway and is located in the vicinity of a store, a corn store, butchers, Croker's Hotel, and the Great East Hotel. The post holes probably erected in the 1850s, are of historic and scientific significance to the Deep Lead district. The remains indicate the early settlement of land in the area for government and mining purposes. They are of importance for its potential to provide information that contributes to a greater understanding of the history of the settlement and establishment of the district, and has a strong presumption of archaeological research potential. Further historical research and archaeological investigation is recommended.
