Statement of Significance

'Sycamores', 56 Sycamores Road, Concongella, has significance as a predominantly intact example of a Victorian style. Possibly built in the second half of the 19th century for W.H. Osmand, M.L.C. or in the early 20th century for Mr. J. Cromie. The house has a substantial landscaped setting with many of the plantings dating from the late 19th century.

'Sycamores', 56 Sycamores Road, Concongella, is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates some original design qualities of a Late Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form, together with the gable roof that projects towards the front and the return verandah that projects at the front and side. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, face brick wall construction, light masonry quoinwork and other dressings (window sills), galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, brick chimneys, narrow eaves, faceted bay window and the roof ridge decoration. The mature deciduous row of exotic trees, other mature trees nearby the house (including the Bunya Bunya pine), and the timber gate posts and gate also contribute to the significance of the place.

'Sycamores', 56 Sycamores Road, Concongella, is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential and farming developments in the Concongella area in the second half of the 19th century. In particular, this house and property has associations with W.H. Osmand, M.L.C., the original owner after the Land Act of 1865, who appears to have built this house as his headquarters where he planted an orange grove. Osmand was a mining magnate, engaged in smelting operations, and is reputed to have made £150,000 in the North Cross Company mine. He made a large contribution to the history of the Concongella district.
