Statement of Significance

The St. Peter's Anglican Church, 367 Dunolly Road, Carapooee, forms a distinctive landmark in its rural setting. The church was built in 1868 to a design by the prolific Melbourne architect, Leonard Terry. The striking feature of the predominantly intact Church building is its white quartz pebble construction.

The St. Peter's Anglican Church is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian Early English Gothic style. These qualities include the parapeted, steeply pitched gable roof form, clad in lapped galvanised corrugated iron. A most unusual intact quality of the design is the white quartz pebble wall construction, combined with original unpainted brick dressings (quoining, voussoirs, architraves and parapet course). Other intact qualities include the front corner buttresses, narrow eaves, point leadlight windows, pointed timber double doors, dressed masonry plinth, metal cross on the gable ridge, and dressed masonry window sills and blocks on the main gable. The rural setting, open grassed landscape, central gravel path and brick spoon drains also contribute to the significance of the place.

The St. Peter's Anglican Church is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of the Anglican church at Carapooee from 1869 until at least the mid 1960s. The building is also associated with the prolific Melbourne architect, Leonard Terry.

The St. Peter's Anglican Church is scientifically significant at a STATE level. It demonstrates rare, 19th century Church construction in the use of white quartz pebbles with unpainted brick dressings. There does not appear to be any other 19th century Church constructed of white quartz pebbles in Victoria.

The St. Peter's Anglican Church is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is recognised and valued by the Carapooee community for religious reasons.

Overall, St. Peter's Anglican Church is of STATE significance.
