Statement of Significance

'The Oaks', 42 Harold Matthews Road, Banyena has significance as a predominantly intact example of an early 20th century homestead Bungalow style. Possibly built in the early 20th century and restored or relocated to this site in the 1920s or 1930s, the house appears to be in fair conditions when viewed from a distance.

'The Oaks' at Banyena is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with farming and residential developments in the Banyena area during the interwar (c.1920s-1940s) period. It demonstrates original design qualities of an interwar homestead Bungalow style. These qualities include the broad gambrel roof form that terminates into a broken back encircling verandah. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, brick chimneys with soldier course tops, timber verandah columns with decorative timber brackets, timber framed doorway with sidelights and highlights, and the timber framed double hung windows.
