Statement of Significance

REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010

What is significant?
The c1960s residence, the two outbuildings and the sites surrounding all three structures to a radius of 25 metres (see also HO8, HO9, HO10, HO40 and HO41).

How is it significant?
The residence and outbuildings are historically and architecturally significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.

Why is it significant?
The residence and outbuildings are historically significant because they are connected with the well known potter, Helen Laycock and with the Dunmoochin community of artists; Helen Laycock was the first non-painter to live at Dunmoochin and her arrival broadened the artistic base of the community (Criteria H & A). The residence and outbuildings are architecturally significant because they are examples of the 'Eltham style' of architecture. Like many 'Eltham-style' buildings the residence and the outbuildings were constructed in stages and featured the use of recycled materials and adobe dug from the site. Laycock's children also constructed their own small buildings on the grounds (Criterion D).

BICK STUDY, 1992
The arrival of the Laycocks was part of the expansion of the activities of the Dunmoochin artists community from only painting to other artistic endeavours; its founder Clifton Pugh sold the Laycocks a piece of land on the condition that they started a pottery. The Helen Laycock residence shares the common characteristics of the other Dunmoochin (and many past Eltham Shire) dwellings, construction in stages using adobe dug from the site and second-hand building, materials, with the end result being a fairly simple dwelling. Also in the manner of that time, the Laycock children constructed their own small, separate structures in the grounds.
