REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010 What is Significant? How is it Significant? Why is it Significant?
BICK STUDY, 1992 BASIS OF SIGNIFICANCE: ILLUSTRATION OF THE THEMES HISTORY ARCHITECTURE DEGREE OF SIGNIFICANCE: LOCAL SIGNIFICANCE EXTENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: ENTIRE BUILDING AND SITE
The 1978-79 adobe house and the surrounding site to the title boundaries.
The house is architecturally and historically significant to the Shire of Nillumbik
The house is architecturally and historically significant because it was designed by the prominent 'Eltham-style' architect, Alistair Knox, and is an important and particularly innovative example of Knox's later work (Criteria H & F). Like many Eltham-style buildings, the house features the use of mud brick and recycled materials (Criterion D).
The Pittard residence is one of the most innovative adobe dwellings constructed in the four decades following the Second World War period and an important late work of Alistair Knox, their leading designer. These buildings characterised the Shire of Eltham during that period and with Montsalvat are the reason for Eltham being widely known in the general community. The curved plan shape and single plane roof rising up over the living area to the double storey end section are of particular note. The Pittard residence is also an excellent example of the owners being involved in the construction of their dwelling.
